i was just wondering what is a reasonable time frame for a tattoo artist to sketch out a custom tattoo. i know it depends on how busy they are, and the details and things like that. its the size to cover your bicep and is pretty detailed. when they draw up the sketch is it with all the details or just a basic outline?

i dropped off my pictures for the design, and talked to him for a few minutes, and did my own little sketch to show the idea. and then he said he would give me a call when he was finished so i could come take a look at it, so i was just curious how long it should take before i get a call to come look at the sketch.

it depends on the artist. i have seen my artist draw a tattoo from scratch in about ten minutes. completely detailed. probably about seven inches by four inches. but as far as scheduling a time to get a consult and to talk about the tattoo and get a sketch at a later date? i'd say a week or two. but i always give my artist plenty of advance notice like "i want to get a tattoo of X on this date in a month" but i never look at the tattoo sketch beforehand. i just go and he puts it on me the first time i see it. he amazes me every time!

The actual time to do the sketch for such a piece will probably be at least an hour, possibly as much as twelve hours. Depending on the artist, and what you want in the design, the sketch should have most of the details on it, but the transfer may be more basic.

Seeing as how I live in Vegas, I have quite a few friends that have become tattoo artists since I've known them... I know for a fact they practice on (for depth perception) and pig skin if its available.. but moreso they also practice on their friends and themselves. A bunch of my tatoo artist friends have random, weird, and not so good looking tattoos on themselves that they did themselves.. Which takes talent... not only are you tattooing yourself.. but its upside down! I mean.. tattoo artist just outline what they've already transfered on your skin, so its like they have a stencil.. but still.. (=
