I'm about to bake a bread, kind of flattish like a pizza crust, but even though it's relatively flat it still needs to rise a bit, so the recipe calls for yeast. I don't have any and can't get to the store - can I just substitute baking powder?

I find it annoying how some of you don't realize that baking powder also makes things rise =) It's not like I have no leavening agent here. "janespeed..." I like your answer, but it won't let me choose it as a best answer until 4 hours have passed. Thanks.

Yeast and baking powder act very differently in baking. Yeast is alive and actually causes fermentation in the bread mixture, as the yeast beasts process starches and sugars in the bread they releases gases and a trace amount of alcohol that provide lift and the unmistakable yeastiness of bread. Baking powder is a chemical leavening that reacts with acids in the dough to form gases (like mixing vinegar and baking soda).
All that makes it difficult to sub one for the other. What you can make instead is something like a biscuit dough. It won't have that yeast taste or chew of pizza dough but in a pinch it will make a bready base for a pizza. Roll it a little thinner than you would for biscuits.

Yes, you can substitute yeast for baking power and/or soda. I've done it before for banana muffins, and it turned out very good; they rose quite well. For my particular recipe of 10 muffins, what I mixed the sugar and 2 tsp. active dry yeast in a measuring cup with about 50 mL of some of the liquid ingredients, which I pre-heated in order to activate the yeast. Then I proceeded as usual. The quicker you activate and the more you feed the yeast, the better. The yeast will produce gas just like baking powder/soda does. In fact, I like using yeast better because it doesn't add a bitter flavor baking soda and powder do. Sugar masks that bitter taste, which is why you almost never see baking powder or soda for non-sweet recipes.

okay I realize this is 3 hours later, but did you happen to do a search for "No Yeast Pizza Crust"? It looks like there are several recipes out there... Here is one of them:
YEAST FREE PIZZA CRUST & HOMEMADE
PIZZA
CRUST:
2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
2/3 c. water
1/4 c. vegetable oil
PIZZA:
Tomato sauce
Ground pork or hamburger, browned
Chopped onion
1/2 tbsp. pizza seasoning
Mushrooms
Shredded pizza cheese
Mix flour, salt, baking powder and water. Knead on floured counter just until workable and spreadable, about 2 minutes. Put on pizza pan, with fingers spread vegetable oil on crust (helps so tomato sauce won't soak in crust) then put tomato sauce on, then meat of your choice, then pizza seasoning, next put on mushrooms and cheese on top. Bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes. This pizza seasoning can be bought, it has all your dried spices all together and you just sprinkle it on.

That is a quick bread recipe. Quick breads are actually cakes that you bake in a loaf pan. They have absolutely nothing to do with real yeast breads.

You will not get the same type of rise that you are needing for a pizza crust.
It might work, you'll need to experiment and see if it does or does not. Let me know what the final verdict is! Good luck!

In the superstore, fruits are usually picked out much too soon. Some are rocks, many are bad. Some of the fresh vegetables are generally right (zucchini, onions, garlic, lettuce, greens, and a few others) so I'd have to go with vegetables.
