Specific gravity is a general measure of dissolved minerals and solutes. A dilute urine has a low SG, a concentrated urine a high SG. A first morning specimen will be more concentrated. If you're diabetic and spilling glucose, it will be high (but that should be picked up on another urine test). Some diseases of the kidney, thyroid and parathyroid can cause excessive sodium and or potassium to be excreted. Diet can effect the result. The test is not really specific for any one disease, but if consistently elevated, your Dr. should follow up with further tests.
