Don't panic there is not much that can be done for a broken, fractured or bruised tail as they can't be bandaged!
Just keep her quiet until you can get her to a vet for an xray.
If it is broken it would be best to have it amputated under a general anaesthetic as tails do not heal well as you can't cast them. They are much happier post amputation.
It maybe just bruised in which case take her to vet for some pain relief.

Hmm no wonder why we crop them in the breed. Are you in the UK? Cock er tails when cropped (they are still cropped here is the states) are cropped at 3-5 days old. It is not a major deal at that age, and is often done with a local anesthetic. (That is how all mine were done, and by a vet, and with a wonderful inverted V cut so that when stitched there would be no scar. People do not believe the nonsense the AR tell you we show people are very careful with our dogs and do not ever want to scare them, harm them or damage them in any way.) Anyway, to shorten a tail does become major surgery requiring general anesthesia. Give the dog a while and when you can asses the damage, if it needs removal the dog will be fine, you will need to have it done by a vet.

Although not very heavy, I would be worried about a luxation of the vertebrae that make up the tail. Depending on where this luxation occurred it could potentially caused rear limb lameness.
I would have the dog to the veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam and x-rays. Depending on what both showed would determine your course of action. Which could potentially include a surgical amputation. In most cases of luxation the muscles and the nerves will not shrink back to normal. If nothing else you could get some analgesics (pain medicine) and anti-inflammatory medicine to help the pain and swelling the dog is experiencing.

How heavy was the mower? I would let her cool down for a little while longer, Then take a look at her tail. Make sure it is not swollen or bleeding. If it looks fine, then I would take her to the vet tomarrow so they can get a better look. If it is swollen or bleeding, I would take her now if you can. And if it is damaged enough that it would need to be removed, then yes, it is possible, but it would be equivilant to an amputation, and would require surgery. But your vet will be able to tell you more about it. Good Luck, I hope she feels better soon.

Definately something to check with your vet about. Most vets I've delt with have an on-call service and you should at least be able to get a call back from a vet to ask about it. A broken tail usually isn't a big life-threatening thing, but if there's damage to the blood vessels, it can cause problems. If the tail has to be amputated due to the damage, your dog's age shouldn't be a problem. But I think that amputation would be unlikely.

At 4 years old having his tail removed would be a major surgery, but is still possible. I doubt it will come to that though.

Your dog is probably a bit nervous about his tail after the incident, if his behavior gets worse, or he's still babying the tail tomorrow, definately get him in for a check up.

Just leave him/her alone for a while and have the vet look at its tail when they're open. I don't think it's broken, or the dog would be yipping whether you tried touching it or not.

a dog is never too old to have their tail removed, yesterday one of my shelter dogs had their ear removed at age 6! but you should wait a while before having that happen!!!
