I accidently sent my federal tax return to the same place I sent my state return. I obviously don't have my federal W2 attachment because I already sent it to the wrong place. Does anyone know what to do when this happens?

Call your State and find out if they forward misdirected returns to the IRS or send them back to you.

When your employer issued your W2's to you there is always a copy for your records. Worse case scenerio is that you make a copy of the return and your copy of the W2 and send it in to the IRS
But as I said check with your State first, if they say they don't forward or return to you , get your copies in the mail

You can hope the bureaucracy will figure out the return was sent in error and send it back to you, but I would not hold my breath. What I would do is this, contact your employer immediately and tell them you need a duplicate copy of your W2 immediately, then make a copy of your return and send it off to the right address when you get the W2 copy. (What you could do instead would be to send the original "Employee Copy" of the W2 along with the new copy of the tax return; make copies of everything first.

I hope you made a copy of the tax return before you sent it.

With a little luck, your state will return the Federal return to you. When you get it back, just send it to the IRS. There's a slight chance that your state might forward it to the IRS. You should call them and ask.
