they are cute dogs!!! they always keep their puppy look!!!Italian Greyhounds are NOT small greyhounds. IGs are a toy breed whose only similiarity to the greyhound is their look! That's it. They are NOT couch potatoes, they are not easy to train like Greyhounds, they can not "hold it" while you are at work all day, etc. If you love Greyhounds, get a Greyhound NOT an IG. There is a price for that small size...they are MUCH harder to live with.

1. An IG is NOT a minature greyhound. They have much more energy and they are a real challenge to potty train. This is the number one reason we see them in rescue.
2. An IG will care what weather they go to the bathroom in. A greyhound can wade in mud a foot deep and enjoy using the restroom. This is not the case with an IG.
3. A greyhound is a 45 mile per hour couach potato. When forced to leave the couch, greyhounds usually walk. An IG is a 2 year old with ADD. They never walk, unless forced to by the leash you are holding.
4. An IG can break limbs by pole vaulting off furniture. A greyhound sees no reasons to get off the couch once they have secured the location.
5. A greyhound will drag you to the door to go out and potty. An IG may save you the time and effort by peeing or pooping on a kitchen rug.
6. A greyhound in the backyard with an IG may kick into prey drive and decide to course. A greyhound may also forget to apply the brakes when his little friend cuts him off.
7. If a Greyhound is like a 10 year old child, an IG is like having a terminal 2 year old child.
8. A greyhound may want to please you, while an IG wants to know what you have done for him lately.
9. Most greyhounds get along with any dog. Many IGs hate any dogs who are not "sight hounds."
10. The #1 reason not to get an IG: Our IG and our greyhound will look so cute together. Looking cute has nothing to do with commitment.

As noted earlier, the Italian Greyhound is one of the breeds which we often see in the emergency clinic for broken legs simply from jumping off the furniture or even out of their owner's arms, even jumping off the couch. This is one breed that you will want to make every effort to keep on ground level.

Broken legs in the small dogs with long narrow legs are not a rare sight. In the emergency clinic they come in all the time. Really. And, it'll always happen on a weekend or at night, of course.

I haven't known any purebred Italian Greyhounds but I have a relative with an Italian Greyhound/Staffordshire Terrior mix. Abby is more legs than body and has a somewhat course thin coat with almost no fur on her belly. If you live in a cold climate, abandon yours and the dog's dignity and get a sweater for the dog. It will need warmth for bathroom trips and walks! She is sweet, fun loving, *highly* energetic, loves people (especially kids), is scared of cats, and somewhat dog aggressive.
Purebred Italian Greyhounds probably won't have dog aggression issues and aren't as tolerant of cats and other small animals.

Are you looking for one? They are a wonderful breed, depending on you and your ability to train they can be a little hard to house break. They are very sweet, elegant and love to sleep in bed with you. They are calm especially for a toy breed but they are also the tallest toy breed. Very low maintenance, not barky and should never growl. They will bark when they are in a home in a pack and someone visits. But you might have to have several for that. If you would like the name of someone who has raised them for 40 years and bred many, many AKC champions just email me and I will send you a breeder referral.

Wow raiders did it ever occur to you that if you dislike IGs you should not be doing IG rescue? There are IG breeders who do breed for bone substance. It is more than likley the breeder in your area has a line that breaks to easily. Breeding for more bone substance does not guarentee that they will not break a leg, but it sure reduces them. I should know I have had many IGs

Good breeders are few and far between. They are very sensitive dogs as they can have pretty bad temperament issues with irresponsible breeding (over shyness, especially). They also have very fragile structures and should not be allowed to jump up and down off furniture. Check out the site below:

I had a friend who had one and they are cute but hers would get cold very easily (always wore a coat or it would shake) and because they are so dainty, you need to be careful because their bones can break more easily than other breeds. They are a little shy but overall friendly though, but not recommended for a household with kids.
