or is it the one who is left who feels the pain?

I think that the one who leaves does not feel any pain. S/he just goes on with his own life without thinking the other person.

If both of them cared and loved each other then the both of them would feel pain.

The one who leaves generally feels less pain, but there is some regret and anguish on both sides. Think about it -- it's rare that we hate/can't deal with EVERYTHING about a person. We may not be able to abide them as a partner, but miss their smell, cooking, laugh, kiss, etc., etc.

On a few occasions -- when the relationship went on far too long -- the person who leaves feels almost 100% relief. Otherwise, there is sadness for everyone.

Others are also hurt -- friends of the couple, family members who bonded with the partner, even (oddly enough) pets who became comfortable with that person. When a relationship is over, there is loss all the way around.

I hope your pain soon diminishes. Time -- the great healer.

I would like to think that for the most part, when two people split up and go their separate ways that they both feel the pain.

There are, I suppose, those instances where someone can be at a point where they just don't care any more, or they have placed themselves in that state of mind where they don't feel it, but I suspect that deep down inside this is not the case.

In a relationship both must care for each other,so there must be painful for either person. I have being in that situation and felt pain in both situation. Have to be a robot not to feel when you leave or made to leave.

In general both will feel pain. One of the hardest things is hoping the other will once again find happiness again.

The ending of a relationship is a natural but painfull part of life.

I know everytime I broke up with anyone I really felt bad, but never as bad as when someone broke it off with me. You think it's the end of the world, but that pain will pass and you will be a stronger person.

I think it depends on the person and how long the relationship lasted. Personally it would hurt me even if i was the one to call it quits.

it depends on why they left. sometimes they feel pain, but if they left for another love, they probably don't. sometimes they don't feel pain at first, then realize they made a mistake and are sorry.
