There's a military standard for men to walk on the right hand side of women, in case a superior is sighted and the man needs to salute (saluting is done with the right hand). The same can be said for anyone enlisted who is walking with someone who isn't.

It's generally the men that walks on the right when with his lady and harks back to the times when men carried swords. They were carried on the left so his right hand was free to draw it if he had too.
