First of all, we are taking her to the vet. But i want to know if this could become a serious problem. So, she is a long-hair spayed female. Lately her hair has been matting around her neck and falling off. Is this just because it is matting, or could she be sick? Can this spread to my other cats? (she had her shots last year, but we just switched vets and they don't send u notices, so we may be a couple months late on her shots)

To be honest i think you have nothing to worry about. Alopecia (hair loss) , can be due to a variety of things. Matting is a really good cause for hair loss as it can come out in chunks like that after it gets caught in the collar. My cat is a very healthy long haired 10 year old and never mated anywhere else but around her collar and has been completely bald underneath it for years, so i don't think you have anything to worry about.

It is like men who wear socks all the time often have no hair where the socks where. Constant rubbing will cause hair to fall out.

If you are still worried get her checked but it really doesn't sound like anything to worry about. Especially if she is not concerned by it

That same thing happend to my 12 year old cat last year. Then she got really bad scabs all over the neck. First the Vet said that it was some other illness so they gave her shots which made the scabs go away and the hair come back temporarily but then it all came back. You should check for flees. That's what it ended up being.

Possibly she has an allergy to the chemicals that are on the collar. This happened to my 10 year old female cat. She had never had a problem with her collar before but then when we gave her a new collar her fur fell out around her neck. After taking her collar off her fur started to grow back within a week.

Bald spots on a cat may be due to an allergic reaction to something like a flea collar, or flea medication applied at the nape of the neck. It can also be due to flea bites or dust mites. I would include something in the diet but you said that the fur is falling off only around the neck area. If kiy is inordinately scratching around that area, you can also check for ear mite infection. But the vet sould be able to check for that. Some cats are very sensitive to flea bites and dust mites - one of my cas will immediately form bald spots if a flea bites him.

Like the above say, it could be a collar. My breeder told me to never put a collar on our Turkish Angora (long hair) because it will either matt the hair, make it fall out, or both.

well we have cats same problems like yours, many said, it is so on and so forth, bring the cat to the vet, we did not bring her to the vet because she eats still in normal way, play, seems nothing at all, just loosing hair around her neck, after 1 month her hair returned back to normal. we did nothing at all.

Your cat does not need shots every year, unless she goes outside, and in that case she needs a rabies shot every three years. After the first shots, they don't need it again. You could be overstressing her immune system. Please consult a more holistic vet.
Next, it sounds like a flea collar is causing this reaction. Dump the collar and switch to 'Frontline" or "Advantage" drops instead.
