Buttercream icing actually doesn't have to be refrigerated. Sometimes you refrigerate it to make it stiffen, or to "set" the frosting on the cake, but because of its high fat and sugar content, it doesn't have to be refrigerated. Microorganisms proliferate using water molecules, and the way the sugar and fats are bound in a buttercream prevents availability of such water molecules. This is why at many bakeries, the cakes aren't refrigerated. If you live in an extremely humid environment, you might have to refrigerate. Otherwise the cake will be just fine stored at room temperature. As long as your son doesn't eat it before the party! :)

No worries. Buttercream frosting is good for 3 days at room temperature or 2 weeks refrigerated. Happy B-Day to your son!!!

It will be fine refrigerated. Just take it out an hour before you're going to eat it to let it come to temperature.

It will still be good tomorrow. Just remember that the frosting will absorb odors, so put the cake in an airtight container. If you don't have one, you better remove odor producing products from your fridge.

I wouldn't refrigerate it. Cover it and leave on the counter if you're going to be eating it tomorrow.
