I use Antivir. They have a free classic edition that will scan your whole computer every day. Download the Avira edition. It catches everything - which sometimes gets annoying when the window pops up so that you can decide what you want to do with the file. But you can see what file or program is holding the suspicious file and it does not interfer with XP the way Norton does.

I use AVG antivirus and Zonealarm firewall. Both can be downloaded free from http://www.download.com. They work great, run in the background, and detect viruses that those $40 programs don't detect or catch. I've been using both for 4 years and haven't had a problem with either program. They also update themselves, so you don't have to worry about it.

are both free AV and are both high quality. But anti-virus software, like any other software, will slow your computer down but using hard disk space, memory and processing time. You could use an anti-virus thing and not have it running all the time and just scan your system once and then scan any new files that you ever download...
