Grooming my cats is like WW3. They do anything to get away from me, biting and clawing.

If you're talking about just brushing, then you might want to try different brushes. I had one that had a ton of little bristles on a square and my cat LOVED it, all I had to do was hold it still and he'd run around it brushing himself. I've also seen brushes that look like a mit you wear on your hand, so you just "pet" you cat's fur and it doesn't realize that you're brushing it, just that you're petting it.
If you're talking about brushing teeth/clipping nails, those can be a lot trickier. When clipping my cat's claws, I used to just let him fall asleep on or near me, and I'd clip one claw at a time. If he woke up and moved away, I just waited until he fell asleep again, its not like you have to do everything at once. If their teeth look bad and its impossible to clean, you can try feeding them hard food or special treats that clean their teeth that are at pet stores. You can also have your vet do a tooth cleaning, but you really shouldn't have to do that too often unless you feed them soft food exclusively, which isn't the best for them in the first place.

There's really no easy way. The only way you can hope for something close to ease is if you have been grooming your cat since they were a kitten, and they got somewhat used to this. Even if you do that, you have to keep up with it. I had a cat that was perfect with letting you trim his claws because I had done it since he was a kitten, but when I slacked off for a month, he completely relapsed and never put up with it the same way again.

The good thing is, most cats don't require grooming very often, since they groom themselves. Unless your cat gets into something messy, or a long haired cat gets a tangle, they don't generally require grooming. If you have to do it, though, it's best to recruit someone else to help you. One person to hold the cat while the other person grooms is the best way.

After they have eaten and when they are sleepy is the best time to groom cats, I found. When they are wide awake and in the "active-play" mode, it is next to impossible without causing the cat distress. But when they have a full tummy, are naturally ready to nap, they actually enoy being brushed and combed. For the "hard grooming" like brushing teeth and cleaning ears, I reserve that for the bathroom (closed door). Speaking all the time in a soothing voice. There is always a bit of a protest, but as the cat gets used to this ritual, the protests will be more token than serious. Of course I give a treat of malt-flavored hairball remedy after the bathroom ritual.

Cats dont usually like to get groomed. There are some things that you can do that will help make them cleaner. Buy a brush (my hairbrush works fine). My cat loves marking it and will run over just to bet brshed. A damp cloth will work too, i run one over my cat after i let her romp around in the yard for a bit. She doesnt seem to notice. Giving a cat a sedative could work if you wanted to give it a bath. I just got my cat declawed on her front feet so i dont have to do that. I just stick her in the sink and wash her, though sometimes it takes two people: one to hold the cat and one to wash it.

It depends on the cat. Yours don't sound too keen on it. But if they like to be pet, you may try one of those gloves that has bristles on it that way they think you're just petting, but they're getting pet AND groomed.

OR

You could try positive reinforcement, brush them once, give them a pinch of a treat and then so on...they'll equate the brushing/grooming with treats...it's a win/win situation for everyone.

LET THEM DO IT THEMSELVES!! Cats learn at a early age by their mothers how to groom them selves. After about about one month they all ready know how!!! Unless your cat is dieing of filth they can do the cleaning by them selves. Now a nice brushing is good here and there but other than that they do it themselves.

You can ask your vet about Ace or Valium. Both are safe and can be dosed depending on the length of sedation required. Also, try to brush your cat regulary to avoid mats. And, yes, a vet will shave your cats mats, but it is a very painful and unpleasant experience for your cat. And no, it will not be pretty!

wait till they are totally calm. Let them groom themselves first with their tongues. Then try to groom them using gentle strokes of your pet brush. Eventually they will enjoy being groomed because they will realize it would save them time. if they don't they will play with your pet brush. it's the difference from toms and queens to neutered males and spayed females.

I bought a cat brush which is really soft and both of my cats just love it.
One will even roll over so I can brush his tummy!
Oh yeah, and when you talk to them. Sound like you are talking to a baby, they really respond to that, it makes them even act like a baby!
