I think this teacher needs to read those books before they comment on them.
That teacher is ignorant. If possible, I would demand to be removed from their classroom. There is no telling what other lies this teacher is telling you.

It's sad to hear the sorts of things that are spouted by some teachers. In my opinion there is no such thing as an "evil" book. These things are works of fiction and people should be smart enough to know that. That being said, of the two series that you mentioned, I believe that the Harry Potter books are entirely harmless. They draw on folklore and fairytales and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. I'm a little conflicted about the Demonata. I believe that they're in rather poor taste and I would probably never pick one up myself. But that's just my opinion.

Regarding Potter books, I would say that the reason they are so popular is the fact that they can be enjoyed by a six year old and a sixty year old person. The way it is written is so simple and yet so fascinating, it sells. Christians who are influenced by outer forces should not however become hooked on them, while other people who don't fall easily under the influence of such things, can. It is a personal choice. I don't know if it is the work of the devil, but surely he rubbs his hands when he sees people Practising magic. I believe as long as you read and enjoy it, and go no further, it's ok. For Christians I mean.

They are books, written by a person for the sheer entertainment value that another person may get out of them. I think there are some books that shouldn't be read or printed. But, guess what, I don't read these books, that is my choice. Just as it is someone elses choice to read these books. Watch an older movie called Fahrenheit 451 { I think that's it}. Its about a society that burns and bans books in the future. Tell your teacher to step out of the dark ages and embrace the 21st century. If that's not acceptable tell him to go back to his cave and enjoy the teachings of whatever McCarthy Era author he enjoys

Ridiculous prejudice on the part of your teacher.
Who burns books? Google "book burning" on "google images". What do you see? Yes, that's right - Nazis. Your teacher doesn't like these books because they turn people away from what he wants them to think. But what is he? What is your teacher? He burns books, right? HE IS NO BETTER THAN THE NAZIS.
As Michael M said - "you can't sugar coat evil". Do Harry Potter books control your mind? No. Is your teacher desperately trying to control your mind? Yes. Don't let him!
Enjoy the books.
Think for yourself.
Good luck.

As a Christian, I have heard MANY people talk about how horrible these books were (HP mostly) and I thought, you know, I cannot accept someone else's opinion on something without reading them and coming up with my own conclusions...
after reading HP (all of them, even preordered the last one) I find it nothing but fiction and fun, a unique way of writing that really can bring a fictional place/set of circumstances to life. I found nothing in them that encouraged or enticed me to want to attend hogwarts LOL
I understand that some people cannot have anything to do with certain things or they are tempted. yes, they should refrain from reading these books. but if you are grounded in your faith, these books do not sway the Christian to sinning ... nor did a single demon come out of the books as i was reading them...

No, they are works of fiction. They aren't intended to try and seduce anyone to the follow the ways of the devil. Anyone who thinks that they are, needs to get a grip on themselves, because anyone who would make moral decisions based on what is a work of fiction, is very seriously adrift with regards to their belief systems. And yes, this applies to people who take Star Trek and the Jedi Knights too seriously as well.

i bet your teacher just LOVES lord of the rings, narnia & the bible...if he/she does then tell him/her to feck off. cuz harry potter is EXACTLY the same thing.
lotr/narnia/thebible/HP all have witchcraft in them, showfriendship morals values family & have that age-old story of good vs. evil...there is absolutly NO dif apart from the characters, time setting & technicallities like that.
k the bible is supposedly a true story while the others are fiction, but thats about it.
look, little harry has GOD-father ok? and he celebrates xmas. cant get more chirstian than that, sweetcakes *winks*

the only real magic in Harry Potter is that that book got my 9 year old niece to turn off the TV put down the Video game and READ.
now that is magic of the highest power.
as for evil.
People that look for evil in everything will find a way to find it. even if they have to resort to their most basic fears of hellfire and brimstone.

They are JUST stories. They spark a persons imagination. Getting kids to read is a wonderful thing.
Is Tolkien demon-possessed because he wrote of magic, trolls, powerful rings and elves?! I've never heard anyone say it is. Then why are people picking on Harry Potter?!
