In this day and age it is a little patronizing. There is no reason at all why women cannot compete on a level playing field in poker, unlike physical sports such as golf or running.
These days I think it should be phased out.

No. It's mostly for marketing purposes to get more women into the game. The female pros are very well respected in the poker community and their talent at the game more than comes through in tournament. Their genitals don't hold the cards, no rules are changed and they are intelligent enough to know when men are respecting- or disrespecting- them. If they felt patronized they would more than stand up for themselves.

why does it need to be separated, it is not physical, it should be a poker tournament. After all women whine about be treated equal all the time now they want their own tournaments

No! why?, there was 45 events this years, and yes one for the ladies. As a man all I see is 44 events for me! that's more than enough.
More womens play poker, I think it's perfecly fine if they have one event just for them.
Take care
