I happen to find the intricacy of the celtic knot fasacinating and the work that goes into creating a chinese or japanese character is amazing. Even if I could trace back my heritage who knows where it would lead. Based on my skin tone it would lead to a big boat and a pair of shackles. Not all of us are descended from african kings and queens no matter how much we'd like to believe otherwise. I'm looking for other's opinion on the subject that some people shouldn't get a tattoo of a certain design just because they may not have descended from a certain heritage.

I think some of the issues with people getting a tattoo from another culture is, to some people, it amounts to cultural appropriation. Many people do it just because they think it's cool. Personally, I wouldn't get a tattoo from a different heritage because I don't have a deep connection with any other one (I'm celtic and have a celtic bad that I design around my leg) and all of my tattoos have a very personal meaning to me.
With that said, I think that if you are getting a tattoo it's important to ask yourself what the tattoo means to you. Are you getting it because it's cool? It's because it looks good? Is it because it's something that is meaningful to you?
Not that there is anything wrong with whatever way you answer those questions, but the important thing to remember is they are not easily removed or covered up if you change your mind later.

if something has deep meaning to you or you feel that you connect with certain symbols from other ethnicities, fine. HOWEVER i think it is ridiculous when somebody goes and gets a "tribal" design because it looks cool, or tough or whatever. it's not even a real tribal design, just some made up crap that is not very pleasing to the eye.
and as for people who get tattoos in languages that they are not fluent in, and don't even know if what they think they are getting is actually what it is... it just seems silly. if you have someone translate it and you KNOW that is what it says
fine. but often times people go in and get something and it absolutely does not mean what they are told it means.
plus, people tend to be more satisfied with their tattoos when they have a connection to it in some way. most people who end up regretting their tattoos later in life are the ones who walked in and pointed to a picture on a wall.
that's my two cents.

Id say get what you want and be happy with it. I mean lifes to short to be caught up in all that stuff. I have heard though that in certain native american tribes their tattoos connotate which tribe they belong to in some cases so if you were going to get a tattoo for the reason of you being supposedly cherokee linked and went to the tat shop and got a apache tattoo you know not realizing it,it may not be appreciated by the cherokee tribe they are linked to??? I mean I guess I could see how you would kind of worry about that sort of thing but you know I wouldnt sweat it its not that big a deal.I think its cool do it.I dunno Id say get a big *** triangle shaped celtic knot right between your shoulder blades just to show people that you have the god given right to do what you want regard.

I think it's probably an issue of 'respecting' their race/culture, etc. or at least not being ignorant of it. I have katakana characters tattooed on me (Katakana is one of the Japanese writing characters). People laugh and say "whats that?" so I tell them it's katakana for my name and of course, they reply with "or so you THINK that's what it is...it probably means 'stupid yank' or something"...yeah, whatever! I've heard it all....then again, they usually shut up pretty fast when I tell them my brother is married to a Japanese girl, they live in Japan and my Japanese sister-in-law drew the characters for me!
Then again, I'm the kind of person that believes everything inked into my skin must be meaningful not just beautiful or 'appreciative of the talent'...my Katakana has alot of meaning to me so it's not like I'm not going to enjoy it when I'm 80 years old. I will never get to the point with ANY of my ink where I think "yeah, WTF was I thinking?" They will always be beautiful to me because of their meaning to ME in my life. And isn't that what tattoos should be about anyway? What they mean to YOU?

it is totally as much as you. you're able to get what you like on your physique. a robust buddy of mine has the Thai be conscious for 'come across' on her foot, alongside with a sprint elephant. She's certainly as white as they arrive, yet she have been given the tattoo to undergo in strategies her 3 hundred and sixty 5 days long stay in Thailand. there is not any rule that asserts you're able to save interior your guy or woman historical past. in case you have a robust reason to get it, which apparently such as you do, get the tattoo. in case you have become something everlasting, you're able to besides get something you % out with.

i don't think it's abig deal to get a tattoo from a heritage thats not your own as long as uyou know what it means. some people might find it offinsive for a black girl to have a japanese symbol on her but i dont see any thing wrong with it.
