it really depends on the application of the reels for me.
i like the abu garcia for freshwater fishing.i like all sizes from the 3500 up to the 7000.good reliable reels.when maintaianed the proper way they cast great.they have excellent drags on them.i also do alot of catfishing and snagging for spoonbills in the ohio river, which i really trust the abu garcia for.
for saltwater applications i like the penn, but i will occasionally use my 6500 or 7000 garcias.
the penns i have,320gt2,i use for fishing bigger game like bull reds or reef sharks.they hold larger line and more of it.
both are excellent reels that i will reccomend to anybody.

Since I can't afford Penn, I'm stuck with the Garcia. The last time I went to the coast I was using a Garcia 6000 and hung a rather large fish. I lost it when it crossed some rocks and cut the line. I really wasn't happy with the performance of the drag, it was jerky. I'm going to try a different reel the next time, it's a little bigger.

Depends on what fish you are after and where (fresh or salt water). Personally I love Penn rods and reels. Another rod I like very much is the Shakespeare Ugly Stick. For reels, Shimano TLD 30 two speed.

+1 on Penn and or Shimano, but what are you fishing for and is it fresh or saltwater. Shimano makes good stuff for salt and freshwater. Penn i go to for strictly saltwater, but ill use Penn or Shimano for saltwater. you can however use either for either. I have 2 Penn 460 Slammers that i use for throwing lures and catching smaller fish in saltwater. And i have a Penn 8500 and 9500 that i use in saltwater for shark. all 4 of these reels are great and run smooth. I havent had the chance to buy a larger trolling/offshore reel for larger shark while surf fishing (use a yak to take the baits out), but i plan on it in the future

Penn Jigmaster and a 7 foot Seeker rod or whatever rod of your choice. spool it up with 20-25lb P line and you're ready for the ocean.
i like the basic Abu Garcia baitcasters spooled up with 15 or 17lb Pline. i pair it up with a 7 foot medium heavy rod for inshore saltwater fish or for larger freshwater bass.
good luck.
