You don't "claim" anything on a W2. Your employer sends you a W2 to tell you how much you made and how much was withheld from your pay.

You file a W4 with your employer to tell them how much tax to withhold from your pay. It has nothing to do with your filing status on your tax return. As a single filer with only one job, you could claim up to 2 withholding exemptions if you don't itemize your deductions.

When you file your tax return, you get one personal exemption for yourself, you do not claim yourself as a "dependent" on your tax return. If you are not married and have no dependents, your filing status is Single.

What you claimed on your W-4 has no longer something to do with the type you report your tax return. that is sole purpose is to tell your corporation how lots tax to withhold. in the adventure that your father and mom can declare you as a based, you lose your guy or woman exemption and different tax advantages. in case you claimed a million withholding allowance on your W-4 and earned greater desirable than $5,seven hundred in 2010, there's a sturdy probability which you will owe somewhat once you report. Dependents could many times declare 0 allowances if there is any probability that they might earn greater desirable than the traditional deduction volume. forget approximately with reference to the fool who claims which you dedicated against the regulation. She's thoroughly clueless! Conflicting dependency claims are so straightforward that the IRS by no ability perspectives them as offender if there is any achievable probability that the declare became into in sturdy faith. neither is claiming an added withholding allowance or 2.

Your filing status is correct single and 1 dependent. As long as no one else is claiming you as a dependent, like your parents if you live at home.

I think it is because you claim single on your w4, that which you fill out with the employer. However when you file your taxes, you claim yourself as an exemption not a dependent.

If you are single, you check single on the W-4 form.

The number of exemptions affect how much tax is withheld. The more exemptions, the less tax is withheld. If you do not have another job or another significant source of taxable income and do not itemize your deductions when you file your tax return, claiming one for yourself is a good bet. If you have another job, you should probably drop it it zero. If you have large amounts of itemized deductions, like mortgage interest or medical bills, you could raise it to two or three.
