I'm only an hour away and I see him about once a week, but I think it'd be so cute to surprise him with like a pre-birthday package. He'd never see it coming!

He's simply cheap. If he's an international student going through college here or whatever, he should have some money for his girl. Since you're going to be a doctor, you should find a nice guy you work with to go out with. Doctors make a lot of money and most likely will pay/buy you stuff.
