I see your problem. The SB-400 was designed with the D40 (and buyer and budget) in mind and it was introduced after the D80 was on the market, so it is not mentioned in the D80 manual. I do not even find SPECIFIC mention of compatibility at the Nikon site.

However, I do see one comment in the description of the SB-400:

"The SB-400 is compatible with all Nikon Creative Lighting System cameras," and this would include the D80.

If you are afraid to try this flash, you can go to http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php?p_sid=r9DVPvui&p_accessibility=0&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD0zNyZwX3Byb2RzPTE5LDMwOSZwX2NhdHM9fmFueX4mcF9wdj0yLjMwOSZwX2N2PTEufmFueX4mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3BhZ2U9MQ** and ask Nikon directly. I am sure that it will work, though, because Nikon says that it will work with "all" creative lighting system cameras.
