I think it is for two reasons:
1) Not a lot of men want to be the "apron-donning" "Beta Male". Probably few and far between for the alpha female to find.
2) If the alpha female wants to find an alpha male, often she will want to try to move "upwards" and find an alpha male who is more "alpha" (i.e. in terms of earning potential).

I think it just raises the bar. There may be fewer quality men to pick from, or fewer that can deal with a strong woman, but such a woman shouldn't want those other men anyway. So, no, I don't think it's harder. Alpha females just know what they want and it's a matter of finding the right guy.

Yes. Most alpha women are looking for alpha men, and that causes conflict because neither wants to sit back and let the other take the lead. As far as other men go, most alpha women will eventually get bored with someone who will let her walk over them.
