First, I wanna say that I'm sorry for your loss. I still have my parents and I know I will miss them a great deal.
I am an atheist and don't believe in a "soul." But through me they can carry on. They will live on in the stories that I tell my kids. In the way my dad would make his special breakfast when I was feeling down in the dumps. In my moms way of asking questions to strangers.

Let's assume for a moment that we actually have a soul (which is infinitely arguable and pretty much unprovable)... this is the analogy I usually use:
If my cat were to ask another cat what will happen when we take her to the vet, could that other cat tell her? Of course not. A cat can't comprehend what a car is, or a road, or an office building, and certainly not who the vet is and what the greater purpose is for her being there. A cat simply can't put what lies beyond her five senses and her limited intellect -- her "catness", as it were -- into a larger context.
Assuming there IS an afterlife, I suspect that what lies beyond this life is equally incomprehensible to us at our present level of functioning and limited by our physical and intellectual bounds. We may catch glimpses, but they're filtered through our human perceptions. So the question of "where does the soul go?" is, in my opinion, unanswerable.

According to the Bible, YOU are the soul; you do not HAVE a soul. Body + Breath = Soul. At death, the Breath/Life-Force (not to be confused what what many call the spirit, the so-called disembodied person) returns to God; the body returns to dust. The person ceases to exist. The Bible compares it to a dreamless sleep. There is no conscious spirit that goes to heaven or hell or roam the earth. What relatives of the dead see/hear/dream are Satan and his fallen angels impersonating the dead.
This does not mean that that is the end of the matter. At the first resurrection, the righteous dead will be resurrected to life eternal. At the second resurrection, the unrighteous dead will be resurrected to destruction, complete annihilation, by fire in a very short space of time, contrary to popular opinion about hell.

Ecclesiastes 9: 5, 10 tells us the condition of the dead and Romans 5:12 shows us that this effects all of mankind. No one is immune.
Your parents are awaiting the Resurrection that Jesus will give to them during his 1,000 year reign as King over a Paradise earth.
I too, will have my loved ones back then. But right now, they are resting from their works. Daniel 12:13

Our souls go into freshly born babes entering the world, mostly. Sometimes our souls choose other vessels, such as spirits or animals. Life after death is like life before death. The more blood we spill when alive, the stronger our lifeforce will be when it inhabits its next host, this process continues until we become a lesser god or something greater.

When the electro-chemical process of the brain cease that which we call the "soul" or the "mind" ceases with it. It does not "go" anywhere.
At least that's what I believe

I am wiccan. I don't believe in the soul, I believe in the Spirit. My belief is the Spirit gets reincarnated in to a different person, or think, a different place and a different time.

I feel we are reincarnated which explains deja vu or the feeling youbeen some where before but don't know when after all when the body dies our brain dies shortly after so we won't remember if we had or hadn't been here before.

Walmart? I don't really believe this, it just makes as much sense as everybody else here practically and if I gave a good true answer it would be ridiculed.
