It doesnt sound like hes sick if hes just sleeping. If there is mucas coming out of his nose or eyes, if hes not eating, if hes losing weight, walking on the bottom of his cage, or has loose stools, then he most likely is sick. Parakeets need 10-12 hours of sleep a night. Is yours getting that much? Also, do you have a radio on or something that will drown the rest of the noise out? Keets need it quiet for the majority, but the problem is, that if its COMPLETELY quiet, in the wild, that means there is a predator. This may be the case, and he is not sleeping, because there is NO noise, and it will make him nervous. Birds will aslo take naps during the day. They are little creatures, and get tired very easy. Make sure your keet is away from drafts, and in a warm and quiet place. If this doesnt help just a little, then i would have him checked by the vet, but it seems pretty normal to me. I have a budgie, and he sleeps a lot too.

If your bird just naps off and on during the day, that is normal. If he is acting sluggish, wings are drooping, not eating or if he is sleeping a lot more than normal, call a vet right away. Birds naturally hide that they are feeling sick, so by the time you realize something may be wrong, the bird can be VERY sick. Please watch your little guy closely and act fast if necessary.

A Cheap Bird's Plea
by Joyce Glass
What is it that my life is worth
How much will you pay
To what extent would you go
If I get ill today?

I know I'm not an expensive bird
My cost is fairly cheap
But what is the price you put on life
For something that you keep?

My wings still spread out the same
My heart still has a beat
So why is it that my cousins
Are the ones you hold so sweet?

I cannot help that I was born
Without a golden egg
Will you still take care of me
Or make me plead and beg?

I rely on you to help me
As I can't do it for myself
Will you take the steps needed
Or just put me on the shelf?

So when you walk by me
Please look me in the eye
If it would come down to it
Would I live or die?

Kevin. Possibly yes!

All birds are very clever in hiding their illness, it is not until you find them dead on the floor of the cage that you often realize they were sick fro a long time. Excessive sleeping is the early sign.

If you can handle the bird try and feel the front breastbone of the bird. If it feels sharp and ridge like and not much body fat then the bird is quite sick.

Sleepiness id the first stage then sometimes the ruffled feather look while they are perched asleep,

The condition is coccidiosis or lights disease ( it is well documented on the net) The bird needs urgent medication. You can get it from your pet store, follow the directions. But there are no guarantees! The source of the problem is the water. Often their feces ( crap) gets into the water and this is what infects them. It is possible that this bird had it before you bought him I understand you had another die recently , am I right?

Your cage needs total cleaning with Clorox if it ids the same cage as the other one died in. Also get back yo that pet store that sold it to you if I am right about this being another dodgy bird.

All animals ought to sleep, attempt putting a huge towel or blanket over the cage in the evening at the same time as it starts to get darkish and then eliminate in the morning. Birds are continually on the look out for probability so if some thing procedures the cage in the midst of the evening it is going to awaken. also placed some toys in with the fowl -small reflect or rope for it to climb, this may help to end boredom in the course of the day.

Well, if he's active he should be okay. Anywho, I would monitor this for a bit because he might always be still accomadating to his new cage (etc.) if he's super tired and always sleeping I'd call a vet. It could also be the cold, so yah.

Ether he is old or very young or he's been active a lot. Take him to a vet to make sure he stays healthy.
