We have a 5 month maltipoo(maltese, poodle) and he always seems to find a piece of paper or Kleenex or something he shouldnt have. When you approach him to take it away, he darts off and makes you chase him. Eventually, my whole family is chasing him and trapping him, which he thinks is a game. Once we catch him, he clenches his teeth together and starts to growl. When i put my hand in his mouth to get it, he starts biting. Any ways to get him to drop what he has or to not have to chase him for 5 minutes??

first, a 5 month old is still very much a puppy and baby and just like a child, needs to be watched and supervised. A small child would get the tissues as well. Puppy proof as you would baby proof for his protection and yours. He does think that this is a game, great , the whole family loves to play with me. When pups play with each other they do tug of war and growl as part of their play. Don't leave things around and that will prevent that problem; also , need to start to teach commands so the pup will listen ; drop it command , stay , sit etc; patience training and a little prevention goes a long way. You can't underestimate a child and you can't underestimate a puppy - he is still a baby and is counting on you for training, play, exercise and patience.

You do realize you are getting a herding breed right? Without proper and consistent training on your part as well as finding something for your dog to do when he gets older he WILL herd you and anyone or anything else he can out of boredom. So yes puppy classes to begin with and other obedience classes after that. Yes puppies nip and mouth, that's how the play and there is nothing wrong with a little bit of it. However when it does become a problem the best way to handle it is to redirect him towards a toy or chew he CAN chew on to his delight or to get up and end any playing for the moment. As for when he's older, plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, to take place of herding in his life.

my dog did that for years. she would scavenge used kleenex from the trash and run off with it to eat it. she dashes away and if you catch up with her, she growls and doesn't allow anyone to pull it out of her mouth.
i think she's just hungry and wants something tasty (she only goes for used kleenex, not fresh out of the box) to chew on.
she's still alive so i don't suppose it's harmful. anyway, better kleenex than something plastic/metal.
solutions are to:
1) just let him eat it
2) put these items out of the way, like in a cupboard or on a high shelf
3) distract him with a treat or a toy

ha ha ha my little jack russell does that all the time so we can chase him. i encourage that behaivor because i like to chase him but if you dont, every time he gets a piece of paper just ignore him and he will learn that you wont be chasing him anymore. or just get him tired by taking him on runs so he doesnt have the energy to run away.

You really need to get that dog into obedience classes. They teach you how to train your dog. You're right, he thinks it's all a big game and hey, look what he can make you all do. Obedience classes. Any dog is only as good as the training it receives.

DON"T CHASE HIM!
It is definitely game to him and you are playing right along. If he gets something he shouldn't have, scold him and promptly ignore him. As soon as he drops the item, praise him and offer him something he likes that he is allowed to have.
