There are dozens, if not hundreds, of different kinds of needles out there. It really depends on what works best for you. Based on my experience tying a quilt (which isn't finished, because I've had so much trouble with it), you need a needle that has an eye large enough to hold the yarn, but small enough to pass through the fabric without resorting to pliers. Instead of using yarn, you might try using embroidery floss or pearl cotton - it's finer, still colorful, and makes smaller knots. You can use regular embroidery needles, or try longer upholstery or tapestry needles, or chenille needles.

You can find most of these needles at your local craft store. If that isn't an option, check out the websites below. Colonial Needles has an excellent selection and photos of the needles. Hancocks of Paducah is great site for all sorts of quilting needs (I've purchased from them many times). They have a wide selection of needles, but they aren't well organized and many don't have photos, so be sure you know what you want before you purchase.
