I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I have no manual. Can someone tell me about the button near the steering wheel that has a 'D' on it. I thought I read somewhere that you use it for towing.

It actually has a circle around it if you look closely enough. Your jeep has a 4 speed transmission, pressing this button locks it out of overdrive giving you 3 speeds. This is used for towing, in mountainous terrain, and in the city where slow speeds are used to keep the transmission from shifting unecessarily.

the d button is four engaging all the cars gears, i am presuming the car is automatic?
you have to press the d button to drive with all four gears of the car, if you turn the d button off, the car will only use 3 gears.
3 gears are used for climbing hills and towing and off road, etc....

I am sure, because my brother owned one of these and i asked him about it.

Probably your "Over Drive" you take it OFF overdrive to tow. Hope this helps!
