It wasn't necessarily offensive, but rude. and untrue. A person can go to church every day, but if they don't pay attention, they are not going to know.
They were just asking a question and looking for an answer, and your 'answer' wasn't really an answer, but a snotty remark. Maybe they DO go to church.
Plus, there is more than ONE location where the ten commandments are listed.

Not all people are brought up in the church, and many are not comfortable going to church.
So in a nutshell, the person was seeking guidance from the Bible. It may seem odd to someone who what brought up with the Bible and/or a good church. Not all people have that opportunity.
God Bless you for asking your question.

The question was specifically about the Ten Commandments. The person asking the question was hoping to find the location of the Ten Commandments in the Bible.
Your answer, while I would not call it offensive, was not responsive to the question.

If the person was genuinely seeking help and you espouse to be a Christian then your answer was rude and judgemental. If you remember the story of the shepherd and his flock, the analogy of the one lost sheep being more important than the rest of the flock.
By the way, I am not a practising Christian but even from my upbringing in the Catholic Church I know that the God is all around, one doesn't only find his presence in a buidling but if you are a true believer, then he is in your heart.

Why is that offensive? Because you assume that your church is the ONLY way of finding truth, which is naiive.
Or think of it this way:
You want to know more about why altar boys are molested in church, and someone says that if you would go molest more children you would know the answer. Would you be offended?
Do you get the point, or are you still blinded by your faith?

From the Buddhist concept of conducting speech for benefit only, AND altruism, to answer "if you go to church more" is unkind due to the fact that you're assuming you know how much they go to church and with the perception that only going to church as much as YOU think they should will answer the question, when in reality going to a building a certain number of times isn't necessarily the ONLY correct answer.
I hope this gives you a different perspective for benefit only.

Some people are more sensitive to criticism than others. The answer was already given by others. Probably this person is one of those who takes everything at face value. That could be the problem.

So you don't even know there are *two* different sets of ten commandments in the bible? You should read it more.
Most questions here could be answered by "find the answer somewhere else". That's not really an answer.

They were sitting on a bullet and when they saw that you think they should actually do something for them-self, the bullet went off. That's why they got offended. I don't know, why does the wind blow. People take offense to the strangest things these days. Don't worry, they'll get over it.
