We have 3 who have no weight problems. We live on a 5acre property but also not too far from a busy street. Any suggestions? She doesn't like fetch and won't chase a ball. The only thing she will chase is a cat.

This dog needs regular exercise - if she won't chase a ball, then take her for a walk, every day without fail!! Start off with a 15 minute walk and increase both time and speed of your walk. This dog needs the exercise for her heart health, but you need to condition her the same as a person who's out of shape needs to be conditioned.

Also, do not give her any human food for snacks. Cutting down on her food would likely be better for her than buying a calorie reduced dog food. That tends to make dogs feel hungry all the time, so reducing her portions is the better way to go.

For the times she needs a treat, try giving her raw veggies (some dogs prefer them frozen).

Will she fetch a ball? that's an easy one in the yard... The real problem is the boys - I don't know what it is about men that they want to overfeed dogs...it's not as if they think it's great when girls are fat. geesh. I would hope that they would get the picture if you showed them the information you found about lower weight dogs living longer - and care something about it. You need to help them - put half her kibble in a jar on the counter as her treats. That is all she can have that day. then you can give her the other half for meals. NO other treats. You can boost her breakfast and dinner a bit with some fresh green beans - canned have too much salt in them - or you could cook some frozen ones. Transfer her over to Lite kibble - same kind she gets now, just the lite version- three kibble a day, over a long time. THe boys could give her some baby carrots or greenbeans as treats if they wanted - no calories in those, but not more than about 5 baby carrots per day. Any chance the boys would help her 'go into training'? At least then, they would have an interest in her progress - perhaps they could all take her for a little run to help her exercise. You could start a pool and have them guess and bet on when she might reach her desired weight - that would give them a stake in her actually accomplishing it. Put a big calendar up in the kitchen, and weigh her each day. Hopefully, they love her enough to take part and help her be less of a spaniel than she is - but stay with you longer. It sounds like they need a challenge, and to help with her progress - if it's going to work. Good luck! You can do this! Lucky dog to have someone who cares about her so much...

Music forces you to eat more. According to a work by the journal Psychology along with Marketing, soft, classical tunes encourage someone to take time over your dinner, so you consume more foods. So, switch off – silence will make you more aware of what you’re putting in your mouth.

Use a vegetable bean dip such as hummus instead of ranch dressing or a fatty cream-based dip.

I starred this question because its what kills more dogs early than any other except cars.
I have a fat dog and a skinny dog The skinny one will long outlive the fat dog but he hogs the skinny dogs food. He is the topdog but I cant get him to lose weight.I even walk them 2 miles a day. I think I will just have to have to practice touigh love and have him skip one meal every day until he gets skinny. Good luck! .

You should take him out for walks at least once a day.Talk to its vet and ask him/her what type of food recomended.More important spend alot of time exercising with them.If you live close to a busy street take him to the park or a open grass area.
