You're also forgetting other variables in your equation. There has been much change in "roads and cars" in the past 100 years. However cars have also become available to the masses as it were and there are vastly more cars on the roads than there were 100 years ago. Therefore more problems incurred. They are always working on new ideas to help stay safer. Such as alarms when following too closely or too close to the edge of the road.

They're working on something called an "air bag." Basically what this will be is as the name sounds a soft, plastic bag of air that will be triggered to inflate when there is an impact and cushion the people inside from physical damage. Some cars will have front impact air bags and side impact air bags. Don't know how much that is gonna cost consumers though.

Oh, and I almost forgot they are now going to make it illegal to drive your car while you are drinking beer which should save a few lives and also making it illegal to talk on your cell phone while driving so you'll have two hands on your steering wheel. I know that sounds crazy but it's true. Oh, and they made it a law to wear your seat belt too, if you can believe that!

Car accidents do not kill anywhere near the number of people that cancer does. Cancer kills several hundred thousand people annually; car accidents kill about 25000. And there has been enormous advances and change in car design and safety features since cars were developed and came into wide use a century ago.
