The best way is to let it thaw in the fridge. Next best is a cold water bath in the sink and changing the water every half hour. The last resort is the microwave but then you HAVE to cook it right away.

safest and most hygenic is in the refrigerator. and yes, leaving food out on the counter to defrost is a huge no-no. and the microwave turns good food into ****.

the best way is to leave it into room temp water for a couple hours (depending on the mass of what you are defrosting). Of course, defrost function in the microwave is supposedly more 'delicate' than normal function, so if you have a good one, go ahead.

The recommended method is to put it on a plate in the fridge for 24 hour.
This means when you are going to cook you take out of the freezer what you will have the next night if it needs to be thawed

Basically if you don't want to use the Microwave then your only option is in Cold water! NEVER LEAVE IT OUT ON THE COUNTER... But you already know that!! Cold water baths are your only option until completely unfrozen!!

In the refrigerator or submerged in cold water. It also depends on what you are defrosting.

Taking it from the freezer, leaving all wrappings on, and inserting it into a roasting pan--then leaving it in the refrigerator until it is thawed.
