The 'chai' symbol is actually the word for life, 'chai.' It's just two characters and one is quite small, so it works as a 'symbol'.

"don't panic" is correct. The Chai is a life symbol. Hence the Hebrew toast "L'Chaim" -- meaning "to life"!
