Depends on the ship. I have traveled on Princess twice. Nice company. They have two codes: Smart Casual and Formal. Smart Casual means khakis and a polo (anything but jeans). Formal is a suit and tie. On a 1-week cruise: 5 SC, 2 Formal. Or, If you want to wear jeans and a t-shirt, just go up to the 24-hour buffet, the grill, pizzaria, etc.

Usually cruises have 2 formal nights if they are 7+ nights but that's only if youre going into the dining room, you can skip it by going to the others restaurants or buffets. It's nice taking pictures on a nice gown or dress but its your vacation and it's all up to you, no one pushes you to it. Enjoy!

Do you mean for passenger or employees? For passenger its different in different cruise lines, check the on youre going on. But one general rule seams to be: No bathing clothes in reasturants. On most modern cls its basicilly comes as you are for the most of the time. Johan

Depends on the ship I have been on three now and 1 was more formal than the other two but when going to any restraunt on board you were not allowed bikinis on and men had to wear their tops apart from that they are pretty laid back

During the day you dress the way you like to. If you feel like blue jeans, wear blue jeans. Shorts, swimsuit around the pool.
Slacks, shirts for just walking around if it gets cool and shirt and tie for supper. A suit is welcome but a two piece suit is okay so long you wear a tie. Go formal and feel like James Bond.

There are no hard and fast rules - each ship usually has a formal night and captain's cocktail party, but if you do not want to participate, you do not have to.
