People always say the eye thing but this is not always the case. The fact is that there is no sure fire way to know if a person is lying or not. So, you can only rely on two things. 1) if you know the person, over time you will know when they are lying or telling the truth. Everybody have their tell tale signs. Different for different people. Some people hide their thumbs or the tone of the voice changes etc etc.
2) If you don't know the person then logic and cunning are your only weapon. Look for inconsistencies in the story. One good way is always to bring up the same subject many times after what you suspect to be a lie was told. See if the story changes. Look for fault in their arguments. It also depends on what they are lying about. You can catch a lot of people lying by keeping track of their activities. If you are just friends then this is not practical but if you are in a relationship then it is. For example, how come its been taking them longer to get home than usual. Their behaviour change all of a sudden. There are purchaces that are not warranted in the bank statement.
You could also do surprise visit. For example, Mikey cancels his date because he was feeling sick. Well, why not show up with some soup and medicine and take care of him. If he really is sick then he will apreciate the effort. If not then, he won't be at the house. Kind of like fishing. Set the bait and lure the fish to bite.

People tend to blink a lot when they are telling a lie. They also will not look at the person directly in the eye.
If they are exceptional at telling lies, it will be difficult. Apart from a lie detector, there really is no SURE way to tell.
A good way to check is to ask a few questions about the possible lie. Ask in various ways, the same question re-phrased. A liar will often trip up on their own words and try to back track on what they said.

There are ways of telling when they're not. If they blink alot while they're talking to you, if they have trouble looking you in the face, if they stare at you in the eyes too long, facial expressions they don't usually make, etc. If they look away from you while you're talking, see which way they are looking. If they look to their left, they are thinking emotionally, if they look to their right, they are thinking logically. Good Luck!

There isn't any way to know absolutely for sure. But I'd say that, if the person has not lied in the past, he's probably not lying now. If you know him, you know if he is a liar. Use your HEAD.

Watch their eyes- they will look to the right if they are recalling something, to the left if they are inventing something! Funny how your brain works like that..
