He (pbuh) was the most honest man amongst his people,he never spoke but the truth (before Islam),that's why his people called him "Alameen"(The honest one),he had great morals,he was illiterate,so god chose him for his message which would change the world forever,like any other prophets before him, people accused him of lying (although he was The honest),being a poet , a sorcerer ,a soothsayer and being crazy,unlike other prophets (whose miracles were during their lives,and after their deaths people couldn't see the miracles anymore),god gave him a miracle which is the Quran, read by the people till the end of the time to see the beautiful words of god and it's miracles.
-i guess you know that Micheal hart chose him on the top of the 100 most influential men in history.

There are quite a few decent books on Mohammed, both from a historic and a religious point of view, check on Amazon and order one.

It is very hard to find the truth from among too many legends. Too many stories to tell
