I just started taking creatine recently. What are the ups and downs, short and long term? Should I use some protein enhancing instead? What about whey?

I don't just want the appearance of 'looking big' as my friend said that is what creatine does to you. I want to actually build useful muscle. Does creatine do that?

A protein powder should be your primary supplementation. Creatine also is a good supplement to have along with the protein.

What creatine does is "overhydrate" the cells, making them more anabolic as well as increasing the ATP production within muscles (ATP is the primary energy source during exercise and also helps in recovery). So, with increased ATP production, a person can do more lifts during a workout than normal.

Creatine is a natural substance already produced by the body and found in such foods as meats and even some vegetables. It's been studied greatly and has shown to be very safe with few minor side effects. Some people experience bloating, some mild cramping and possibly gastrointestinal issues, but I've never had these issues personally.

I'd definitely suggest getting some whey protein as well. Whey naturally contains many good BCAAs (aminos) and most are fortified with vitamins and minerals. One of the biggest mistakes many aspiring bodybuilders or powerlifters makes is not getting enough adequate nutrition.

Creatine is a component of all muscle tissue and a by-product of muscle breakdown. In the blood, creatine is excreted by the kidney's. You consume it whenever you eat meat and the body will excrete the excess, assuming your kidneys are functioning correctly. The muscles use creatine as a building block just as the bones use collagen. You do not need it as a supplement, or any other enhancer if you eat a normal diet. The biggest factor in whether you will build muscle by body building is your genetic makeup.
