Those are both very good foods.

The thing to remember is that alot of your high quality foods are designed for all life stages. Innova Evo for example can be fed from puppyhood all the way through the senior years.

Puppy specific foods tend to have way more protein than needed. This causes rapid growth. Rapid growth in turn leads to joint problems later in life. An all life stage food will promote a more desired slow growth, and thus less bone and joint problems later.

Canidae is also an all life stages food. A 5 pound bag on amazon.com is about $6. You also have to remember when you switch to a high quality food, you'll generally feed less of it than you would feed of say the Proplan your feeding now. Sometimes by as much as half.

Here is Canidae's website, they do have store locator as well. http://www.canidae.com/dogs/all_life_stages/dry.html

Here's some more tips on finding other high quality foods.

Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Nutro Natural, Innova, Innova Evo and Cannidae.

There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:

A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.

A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.

A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.

A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.

There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

You can also buy a bigger bag and freeze what you won't go through quickly as it makes it more cost efficient. I feed my ferret Chicken Soup kitten and freeze half the bag as the little bitty bags are pretty expensive. I fed Chicken Soup large breed for quite a while until I switched over to raw and I still think it is generally a very good food, especially for the price. I still feed Chicken Soup canned as a frozen Kong stuffer. I haven't fed Canidae, but I generally hear good things. Either would be fine. By the way, you can take your dog off puppy food by 5 months or so. Giant breeds should never be on puppy food and large breeds shouldn't be on it longer than 4-5 months. Even smaller dogs can come off by 5-6 months.

~ Honestly the best food you should start off with when you have a dog with allergies is California Natural. It is made by Natura and they have an awesome product line of Innova, EVO, Karma and California Natural. It is better than either Canidae or Chicken Soup and you would mostly likely buy it in the same store you found these as these types of places sell all natural higher quality dog food then the grocery store or large pet stores. I would check out California Natural first, if you are completely against that idea I would go with Canidae first since it is not entirely owned by Diamond.

I already answered your previous Q :)

As for a small bag of Canidae, I'm really unsure because I have two APBT's and I need the BIGGEST bag I can lay my hands on. I also have free delivery service to my house. LOTS of states/cities/towns have this! You can't beat that! Chicken Soup is a good food but to me it's pricey considering it isn't as comparable nutrition wise than some of the other foods.

Also, I forgot to put in my last post. Better foods mean less food for your dog. Which means that either way you will be spending less on dog food because your food will go further :) Also means less mushy and not as much dog poo which is always good!

Good Luck!

As for the Purina and not switching poster. When you purchase and or adopt your babies you enter into a lifetime "agreement" and that is to give them the best possible EVERYTHING! Love, care and food. Purina is in no way a good food. Not only that, it's pricey. It's about the same as a $30 McDonalds Cheeseburger. It's not a nutritional food and in the long run will cost your babies more harm than good. Just look at the label. Score it on the scoring chart. It's not a good food for your babies!

Both are good kibbles, and Canidae does make the small bites puppy kibble. My very favorite is Canidae..
The difference I see between the two is the excellent dental health and teeth cleanliness from feeding Canidae..I have fed both.(and Pro Plan) .
Canidae costs $35 per bag of 40 pounds, or at my supplier, it is $38 for 40 pounds, but every 6th bag is free..

I haven't feed my dogs the Canidae, which I have heard is very good. I do, however, use the Chicken Soup. I love it. I have recommended it to several people. I breed and raise Shih Tzus, and the results I have had with the Chicken Soup are just amazing!

no canidae though it is fine food does not make a small or large breed food, its just a general formula. you can check out blue buffalo, innova, solid gold wee bit, are a few that should be very good. i have a large dog and feed innova and am VERY happy with it and my dog goes nuts for it. its very rich so you don't feed as much. i've tried chicken soup and liked it very much as well. glad to finally hear someone whos knows better than to just buy purina or whatever they see on tv.
