As you approach a town to attack it, first offer its people terms for peace. If they accept your terms and open the gates to you, then all the people inside will serve you in forced labour. But if they refuse to make peace and prepare to fight, you must attack the town. When the LORD your God hands it over to you, kill every man in the town. But you may keep for yourselves all the women, children, livestock, and other plunder. You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies that the LORD your God has given you. What does this mean

When they go to war against a town, because of it's wickedness in the eyes of God, they were to offer peace, the town had to serve the Lord God of Israel. If they didn't accept the terms, men were killed. The women and children became part of the families of the men who attacked the town. (sometimes servants) I didn't see any mention of rape here. The women became servants and sometimes they would marry them. They did not rape them.

You raise an interesting issue here. I know of many people, who were into all kinds of devious things and practises prior to becoming a Christian. Had not God drawn them to Himself for a spiritual relationship through Jesus and the Holy Spirit, this world would be a much-much worse place to live in. Oftentimes, many non-believers neglect to realize what a lot of "now" Christians would be like in the old way of life. Many convicts have embraced Christianity and went on to become Doctors etc. Potentially, this amoral society of ours would be a killing field without Christianity instilling Christian moral values into it. Love expressed to others means do not harm nor murder people but do good to them, for example.

This was the time when YHVH was punishing the inhabitants of Canaan for their years of evil, and giving the Hebrews their land. Some of the rules don't sound quite right. They may have lost something in the translation. That is not very important, because these are not rules for our conduct today.
