people have picked any imaginable date over the course of history. So far, none have been correct. So 2012 is _probably_ also not correct, and if it were, it would be a complete coincidence.
To answer your question, in a couple of billion years the sun goes red giant and slowly cooks this planet. This would kill all life as we know it in the process. Then, after again a very long time, there is a good possibly our sun mutates to a dwarf-type star and everything gets the deep freeze treatment.
In the meantime, I hope that whatever we (as in humanity) have become have colonised nearby stars, although I don't see how we are going to cover the massive distances involved. Maybe we'll learn how to ignite our own stars and simply travel with them. But um, that is pretty far-out conjecture. Might as well suppose a giant meteoroid wiping out all humans (but not all life) on earth or discovering some FTL transport mechanism.

The world will never end, per se, it will merely transform from one energy state to that of another! Those who predict that exact date, well, we've all seen that before! And if they're right, we'll pray someone will be around to record the truth of that occurrance! I don't care, one way or the other. All souls will be transported to where they must go. We may have earthly bodies, but that's not all there is. We'll be transformed as well, into other forms of energy! I look forward to the trip!

Nobody knows for certain, not even the angels in Heaven.
As for when might I guess, I think most generations think it will happen in their lifetime.
I choose not to worry about it. I prepare one step at a time as I am able and follow his commandments. Then, I don't have to worry about it, whether it's tomorrow or 1000 years from now.
