Dog toothpaste is supposed to taste good (to dogs), but the idea of using broth may help also.
But to keep the dog's mouth open, use one hand over the snout or under the jaw (whichever you prefer) and press the cheek skin inward with your thumb and finger. The dog will not close his mouth because he would bite himself. Of course, you need to do the whole thing gently and in a friendly way so the dog doesn't get upset. If you can't finish the job the first time, fine. Try again later.
Once he gets used to the idea, it will be easier.

Hi i am a vet tech. If the dog as little tartar or normal looking gums/teeth, then go to the store such as pets mart etc. and get some finger slips to put on your finger with special DOG tooth paste to brush there teeth. If the dog has bad to mild tartar, Schedule with the vet for a dental. The dog will be under due to the fact it takes a good hour to do the job right! It won't hurt the dog and it gets rid of the chances of periodontal disease.

You first need to start slowly. Introduce your dog to the toothbrush. Yes they do make toothbrushes for dogs or you can use a soft to medium stiff humane brush in a size suitable for your dog's size. Do not brush longer than your dog is comfortable with at first then slowly increase the time each time until your dog is comfortable with you brushing her teeth. I also use a flavored toothpastee like cheese or beef. You can get this type toothpast in most stores that have a pet section. If not then try a pet supply store or catalog or your vet. Good luck. It just takes time and patients.

try starting slow. get her used to you putting you hands on her muzzle for a few second s and calmly tell her that shes being very good and give her a treat. you should slowly notice her getting more relaxed about it. then you can gradually pull up her jowls so you can see her teeth but with her mouth still closed and just calmly tell her thats great and how good she is and give some treats. after a few days of this she should get comfortable with you near her mouth and allow you to get in there more. also check out a book called "how to be your dog's best friend" by the monks of new skete. these monks train and breed german shepherds and they have a section in there book about this exact thing. its very helpful and for $25 bucks it's well worth it.

you dont really have to brush your dogs teeth to keep it clean. what i do is i give my pup dental bones that are meant to clean dogs teeth while they chew. well its given my pup great results because his teeth are as white as a pearl and im not lying either. I strongly recommend you do this because its easy, gives great results, and my vet said its the equivilent as brushing your dogs teeth. i usually get them at Petsmart but ive seen them at the dollar store too.

if he's a big dog you need three people to do it, two to put him in and take him out of the truck and one, prefferably a dentist to clean his teeth. naw i'm just kiddin, that chicken broth idea works really really good that's what we used to train our dogs, now when the see their toothbrushes, they roll over and stick out there tongue like their saying, aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh, it's really cute.
