I will be going in for a biopsy next week and will be put to sleep for approx half an hour during the procedure. My doc asked if I smoke marijuana and I said no because I wasn't sure if what I would tell him was confidential or not. Now I don't smoke on a regular basis, only about 3 times a week, do I need to tell him so that he can inform the anesthesiologist? Or does it really make much of a difference?

doctors don't care about your recreational drug use. they ask the questions because they need to know what you use because it can interfere with your care and avoid harming you. period. and yes, it is confidential. there have been lawsuits in which patients families have sued in the event of a bad outcome. they have lost because the patient failed to disclose their use of drugs and or alcohol. it has to do with informed consent. patients also have responsibilities and yes you need to tell him everything so he can take the best possible care of you.

Assuming you are healthy, it shouldn't make any difference whatsoever.
