this sight have MUCH good info on not only breeds but proper care for them.
We have a husky..he just turned 2. best of luck to you but remember mostly.....
1) the husky breed is bred to RUN!!!!!! and will do so at every chance
2) munti coated dog and SHEDS TONS!!!!!
3) huskies DO NOT do well with small pets (rodents...cats...birds) and will kill small creatures. an insane habit that CANNOT be broken.
4) they are not watch dogs, having great hearts and being overly friendly.
5) if you "listen" to the husky it may not howl or bark but makes lots of happy sounds.(most of which involve play)

There are so many websites - just do a search for Siberian Husky. "Siberian Huskies for Dummies" is great too. I have two of my own and love them - they are great dogs. The most important thing - they are high energy dogs and require a lot of exercise. They need a yard (with a high fence! they're escape artists) and lots of walks. They're also pack animals - and while it's not completely necessary, they like to have a "friend" around - can you get two? If not, find a dog park nearby or friends with dogs that can get together and play often. Husky play looks kind of rough b/c they tend to grab each other at the neck where they have extra skin - but they're just playing. The other thing is that many are "singers". They don't bark much but howl. If you live in an apartment a husky may not be a good idea. If you do get one - you'll be hooked forever. They're great dogs. Just a thought though, there are so many that need rescuing - look into that before paying big bucks to a breeder. Mine were both rescues and they're wonderful!

This is a must read website for intending Husky owners, unfortunately it seems to be down at the moment, but when it's available - read it.
Huskies are a wonderful breed but definitely not for everyone. Do you have the time & energy to give this dog the physical & mental exercise it needs? Do you realise that Huskies should NEVER be allowed off the lead? Do you have a 6 ft + high fence to stop your Husky disappearing? Are you aware that Huskies can, and will, kill cats (or any other smally furry thing that moves!) Has your friend's Husky & the sire of the puppies been health tested for HD and eye problems? Are they KC Reg? Are you prepared to have your house trashed by an adolescent Husky? Do you have neighbours likely to complain about howling dogs?
Sadly, baby Huskies grow into big grown up Huskies!

Siberian Huskies are really great dogs. Mine is just over a year old. While they look absolutely beautiful and can be lots of fun, you should definitely do your research on this breed before getting into the commitment of owning one. They are very smart dogs and tend to be very stubborn, making them a lot more difficult to train. Huskies are also extremely hyper and hate being left alone. They need tons of exercise or else they can get pretty destructive (we've had furniture ruined and have had to make several house repairs-and that's with him getting daily exercise). If you get a husky, you should definitely invest in some puppy training classes at around 5 or 6 months. And if you've never heard of a gentle leader, you should stop by your local pet store and look into it. This being said, huskies are great with children, love everyone, and make great companions! They are definitely worth all the trouble. Check out this website to learn more about this breed: http://www.shca.org/shcahp2b.htm Goodluck!!!

I am actually getting a husky puppy...in two days. I am also a vet tech. Huskies ..the females get to be about 35 to 50 pounds and the males 40 to 55/60 pounds. The are a very gental alert breed. But they need a lot of room to run due to their past of sled dog in them. They are a non aggressive dog twards people and other animals. They need to be brushed atleast twice a week. Due to there Long coat. They are a very good breed and an all around clown ! They make a good dog!

Huskies are generally very good dogs and have an excellent temperment. They can be easy or hard depending on their type of fur to groom.
The only problem I see is they need to have a LOT of exercise [8-10 miles a day] and they are very hard to train.
Other than that they are an excellent family pet and are happy dogs!

There's a great book called "the good the bad and the furry" which outlines the personalities of all sorts of dogs so you can see what's required and whether that dog breed would have the characteristics to fit into your life without too many problems. It's a great referrence guide!
