The Holy Spirit is the Comforter Jesus spoke about. The Holy Spirit is the third in the God Head. The Holy Spirit's duty is to open our eyes to God's truth when we seek and believe. The Holy Spirit will guide us from darkness to light, from wrong to right.

There are many works or jobs of the Holy Spirit but here are two scriptures to start.
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

He is the reveler of truth, it is his job to to teach you to help you stay upon the right path. to warn you when you need it. His job is also to instill in your heart the sure knowledge of when you hear the truth. He is the small still voice that you some times feel like you hear giving you a warning that something bad was going to happen. He is not to be mistaken for the Light of Christ that lets you know right from wrong, or your ability to reason out what you should be or shouldn't be doing. Your conscience is not the Holy Ghost

Indwells the believer, convicts of sin, guides, comforts, etc.
Also, He restrains people from worse sin, but when He is taken out of the way(from this world) that's when all hell is going to break loose.
