It isn't illegal and there are slaughter houses in the UK which slaughter horses for the international market. It is still quite taboo for Brits to eat horse as we have such a long tradition of treating these particular animals as pets. It would be tantamount to eating dog. There is simply no real market for it.
However, many of us have tried horsemeat in France and Belgium. I find it makes pretty good burgers.

I don't believe it's illegal, it's just that nobody sells it because it's not popular. I don't think they have a problem with importing for private consumption from France.
Here's an article about horse meat being found in some imported salamis. It clearly states that there are no health issues and no ban, but they want to make the public aware so they can choose to eat products containing horse meat or not.

Every body knew it was illegal when Blair twisted it and Conservatives supported the war at that time. This was the view of Lib-Dems for all the time. Lord Goldsmith admitted it was not legal at that time but he was silenced Few genuine politicians like Robin Cook, Clair Short and Galloway try to protest but all of us, British fools listened to Blair. But truth should prevail.

There are no specialist facilities for the slaughter and processing of horse meat, also we don't have horse meat sales in the same manner we do for cattle. I've no doubt someone will complain it's against their human rights to be denied it and Bliar will cave in to them. You must consider also that the UK regard horses in the manner of pets.

Not illegal but considered pagan. It was associated with feasting and pagan rites and disapproved of by early Christian leaders. As Christianity spread the eating of horseflesh became less acceptable.
