Make sure you have some very light leader material, if you're bait fishing, no more than 2 pound test (I used to use 3/4 pound a lot). I remember starting out, and not catching a thing when I thought I was doing the exact same thing as the guys who were catching. Turned out I was using 6 pound line all the way to the hook and they had 1-pound leaders. They got limits, I got nothing.
As for bait, check a local tackle shop or ask the guys at the lake who are catching fish what's working. Some places the cheesy stuff (Power bait) work best, other places you need salmon eggs or worms. For lures, casting from shore in lakes I like 1/8 or 1/4 ounce Hotshot spoons; in streams I like the small spinners. Some places the lures will outfish the bait, other places you need the bait. Again, this varies from lake to lake and season to season, so you have to check what's good where you're going.
For tackle, I like a small open-face spinning outfit with 2-pound or 4 pound line. (This is for the basic smaller trout which are planted in most lakes, from 6 to maybe 15 inches. It'll work for bigger fish, but you'll have to play them carefully so you don't bust them off.)

For a beginner you can use a light spinning rod of 7 ft and a small spinning reel loaded with 6lb breaking strain line to about 1/4 inch from the lip of the spool. As bait, there are lots of spinner baits that work well, usually smaller is better though size 1 or 2 spinners work best. Meps make some cracking spinners for trout like the red commet and the blue commet for clear water and the black fury for coloured water. Vibrax also make a few great lures, my favourite and most successful being a size 1 darkblue spots on a black backround! For spinning, a good flow on the water is best as the trout will take your lure more quickly because they don't see it as clearly as in slow water.

trout fishing is like deer hunting you have to hide your scent I make my own dough bait .
1 you make a dough .
2 take sardines , herings mash up with a fork add to dough this could be a legal way of chumming.
3 add a few shots licorice.
4 use on small tr eble hook with coil ,small leader no larger than 2 lb. 2 BB shot on a ultra light.
the main thing you want to get there early early daybreak this is the best time to catch trout.
5 use power bait the metal flake is real hot .
6 spray and use fish lure in the bottle
black nymphs, rooster tails platic worms real worms take your pick corn, marshmellow, cheese.

Red worms and nightcrawlers are a good way to start. Power bait also works good. You can use minnows either live or dead. If you want an easy way to carry minnows, pour salt in a baggie and add the minnows. The current will give the dead minnows action and the salt helps preserve them. In-line spinners like a Panther Martin, CP Swing or Roostertails will also catch trout.

Hi there, are you gonna be on a boat or shore fishing. For boat you can troll small metal lures like cast master or spoons,or you can use spinner flies. You can also fish the bottom with air inflamed night crawlers or use power bait.you will need:4lb tess line for the reel, and 2lb for your 12inch leader, and a #18 or #16 treble hooks.this is only for fishing off the boat, when its still.use heaver tess line and leader when trolling.bye>1/8 &1/4 size egg sinkers, swivels small, around size12.you can also use all this from the shore.Try to use light weight reel and rod.You can also go to your local library and look up a book on fishing, and one on knotts.Try to learn how to tye a crimp knott and a palamar knott.Good luck!!

They Love velveeta cheese, corn, marshmellows. I've never tried this, but, I was told to spray wd-40 on my hook and it'll catch them everytime. So if your not catching anything that day try some wd-40 on your bait.
