All I know is from Liam D'Arcy Brown's -Green Dragon, Somber Warrior-. I read it this summer, so the details are a bit fuzzy.

There's an Islamic population in the far west, in the mountains of the -stans. The language is more Turkic/Arabic than Chinese. I think that the mountains have a lot to do with the area not being more settled by Chinese from other regions.

He talks about different types of religious practices in the north, south, east and west. But he thinks of it more in terms of ethnicities and neighbours rather than geography.

If you can't find anything else, it might be worth a read. He writes about geography a lot, just doesn't connect it specifically with religions. Actually, it's a good read anyway.

The culture as a whole has been influenced by it being possible to close off the culture from other cultures - literally with a wall.

Religions: Buddhism, Taoism (influenced by Buddhism), Islam, Christianity, Confucianism.
Buddhism and Islam came into the country through trade (the silk route).
