There is NO worm in Mexican-bottled tequila. There is a worm in some types of MEZCAL, a different drink made from a different variety of plant and different process.....

But yes, you are supposed to eat the worm in mezcal, and it wont "mess you up" as it has no psychotropic or magical powers.....it's a worm that has been pickled and raised for use in the mezcal. It is protein and alcohol

Tequila NEVER contains a worm. It's not allowed under Mexican law. What you're talking about is Mezcal, a different type of liquor also made from agave cactus. Most good mezcals don't have the worm (which is really a larva). They add it to cheap ones so that US college kids can claim they "ate the worm". If your friend is going to Mexico, especially a touristy area where college kids hang out, they should have no trouble finding mezcal with the "worm". Oh, and why did you post this under the "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered" category? ------------------------ I repeat NO TEQUILA HAS EVER HAD A WORM. If you have heard otherwise, you have been misinformed. Mezcal is a type of liquor, not a brand (like thw word vodka). There are many brands of mezcal, just like any other liquor, but not all contain a "worm". Your friend will just have to ask for a mezcal with the "worm". It shouldn't be hard to find.

First of all, almost all the "tequilas" with a worm (called a 'gusano') are made by American companies. For the record, it is usually mescal, not tequila, that has the worm. They are two drinks made from two different plants. The worm thing started in the 40s to boost sales of American mescal.

The gusano is usually a pickled butterfly caterpillar, which are eaten as food in some parts of the world. You can eat the worm, but it does not get you high, make you trip, or get you any drunker. It's just protein and alcohol and it's mostly a huge urban legend.

The worm in some Tequila has nothing to do with the quality of the spirit or bad sanitation. It is put there by the distillery as proof that it is not counterfeit. A factory in the US or anywhere else making "tequila" from agave nectar might not have access to these worms which are found living on the agave plant. There is nothing wrong with eating it, it is long-dead & sterile.

They are found on the plants which make tequila. The maguey worm is considered nutritious and a delicacy.

Mezcal, although not quite a tequila but of the same family, has a worm in it which is said to have hallucinogenic properties, and in life it feeds off the plant which mezcal is made from. i believe you are meant to lightly pan fry it in butter before you eat the thing.

the worm lives in the pyote cactus so when you've drunk the tequila eat the worm to achieve enlightenment

Oh, pick me! Pick me! I know this one...
The worm is there to show the purity and quality of the alcohol content. If it is good tequila the worm should be well preserved. If it begins to decompose you know you aren't drinking the good stuff.

yes, the longer it sits the bigger the worm. I had my tequilla for over 3 years and the worm was huge, and actually swam. Kinda gross. but when we were sober we ate just the worm and oh my gosh we got really messed up!!!!!!!

Never mind all the above sensible answers.....the worm got drunk and fell in the bottle, died and sunk to the bottom. Bad Hygene in the distillery.
