I have a friend who is Muslim and has been telling me a lot about their faith. However he lives too far away to really guide me into the religion and has struck my curiosity. I now want to do some research and learning of my own but am not sure where to begin or how to go about doing so..can anyone help?

I feel bad for you, I really do. Please don't let the person, you call a friend, influence you to join this violent and hateful religion, by only telling you about the parts of it, that will seem attractive to you. I will provide you a couple links that will hopefully open your eyes a bit. Seriously read a bit about it, before you jump in head first, so to speak. Make sure you thoroughly understand what you are getting yourself into.

Why would you join a religion that advocate the beating of a wife? Quran 4:34
"Men have authority over women because God has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. or "Prophet! Rouse the believers to wage war. If there are twenty amongst you, patient and persevering, they will subdue two hundred: if a hundred, they will subdue a thousand of the disbelievers: for these are a people without understanding." quran 8: 36, how to perform war against nonbelievers.

So you want to become a person with no civil rights or personal freedoms? Muslim women MUST obey every command given to them by their husband or any other male within his family. Women are less than second class citizens within Islam. They effectively are slaves. So become a Muslim and have a nice life!!
