Why, when they lied to the Holy Spirit about a land sale transaction, did the couple fall down dead in front of the Apostles?

The Apostles were not in the Old Testament. More of your superior I.Q. at work?

You sure you didn't already ask this question? It's been answered hundreds of times. Yes, He is love. But that will not excuse you to do whatever you want. He will judge sin and pretense. He is to be respected. Judgment comes in many forms with this being one of them. He knows a mans intent whereas we who can only look outwardly, don't. So we are in no position to judge God.

they lied to God and to the Apostles. Lying is a sin and they knew they were doing wrong but chose to try to deceive them anyway so to show the seriousness of the sin, they were slain at once. Lying to God is not something to take lightly. Making a vow before God is serious business. It was the same as if they were spitting in God's face. It was blaspheming the Holy Spirit as they were trying to lie to Him rather than do what was right. They had a choice to either donate the land or the price of it or just a portion but they called on the Holy Spirit to witness their lie, something that is not good to do. It was out of love that they were stricken dead at the time as it showed many millions of people from that day on the seriousness of calling on God to witness a lie.

ah, you like the "tough love" god of the old testament. The Smiter. The Angry God. The Vengeful God.

How was your childhood, midge?
