If the main reason for reincarnation is to be on a spiritual journey whereby each life helps us progress towards enlightenment, then why don't we remember our past lives so that we can learn by our mistakes.

That's a religious assertion about reincarnation, which like many religious assertions may not be accurate.

The only *evidence* for reincarnation is the verifiable memories of children with spontaneous past-life recall. Such evidence has been extensively documented by Dr Ian Stevenson at UVA. Look for his books on Amazon if you're interested.

Assuming that this evidence points towards reincarnation -- that seems the most likely explanation, but there is a variety of other paranormal explanations -- we have very little understanding of how reincarnation works. In terms of factors which correlate with past-life recall, the only relevant data suggest that children with spontaneous past-life recall are very likely to have died a violent death.

That is because for the most part reincarnation does not exist. The Lord may in a few special cases let a person come back in the flesh, that I don't know. But for the most part, if not always, we are here on earth only once to choose our direction and do the best with what we have. How would you occupy two body's upon the resurrection if reincarnation existed?

~~~vincepram,,,, 1) Do your own investigation on the procedures of how the lamas of Tibetan Buddhism locate their Dalai Lama,,, 2) The reason we can't remember most of our past lives is for the same reason that we are not just given answers to a test unless we first study the Who, What, When, Where and Why. This gives the subject Dimension and Context. We MUST live our experience so that we may FEEL with all our senses to understands it's full effect. Otherwise we would have no Sense of Context if we are just told "This is Right and This is Wrong". This, of course, is an Oversimplification.
as i understand it
not everyone has a past life and not everyone will reincarnate
however there is some amazing evidence for past life experiences
i seen a film once when studying reincarnation at university
this film showed 4 women who had past life memories ...
they followed the women to the places they had described
one lady believed that before her life in Australia she lived in Aberdeen in Scotland
she described many details about her life and her time at Aberdeen university
when she went to the university , she described the building as it was when she lived
it was so precise that they had go into the archives to find the old blueprints for the university .... and she was correct !
there is no way this lady would have known what she did
Reincarnation is real and does exist. You cannot accomplish everything God wants you to develop in one lifetime because it is so short. Read Many Mansions by Gina Cerminara who has the best explanation, or have a Hypnotist do past life regression like I did.
The brain has memory, the energy that continues on doesn't.
As for proving, read up on the Dalai Llama (sp?) for some insight on reincarnation. It might not make a believer of you, but if you're really interested he's the best proof.
No one tries to prove reincarnation. Those who promote the idea such as Dr. Ian Stevenson are careful to acknowledge that they are only providing anecdotal evidence that is suggestive of reincarnation. Even in Buddhism it is a matter of choice whether you believe in it rather than a doctine which is promoted as fact.
Some religions, like Buddhism, doesn't believe in reincarrnation how you are thinking of it. Not just the same spirit reliving, religing, ect. When you die, some of your wisdom will be reunited with the greater conciousness and some of it will have to be reborn. If we are all part of one whole, different parts keep being reborn.
