What are some ways a person can travel abroad to help people in destitute or war stricken countries?

I'm especially intrested in helping orphaned children.

Well : you can "Volunteer in Operation Out Reach where
the American Troops would help those whom are
Sick, Homeless, Cold & Hungry refer http://www.american.missionaries/help.org
