I am agnostic, but I also believe that everybody is entitled to their own beliefs and religions as long as you don't preach to me.

Well I for one would like to congratulate Victor for the stupidest comment I've read on the Religion and spirituality thread so far! Where to even begin with this, my "god".
There's a bunch of these things called "atoms" flying about in space. They all come together to form a massive clump, they compress and poof! a star is born....how crazy! Thats just heretic talk Victor don't worry. Jebus made it anyway. Oh or how about just a few hundred years ago even suggesting that the earth was round? Or (drum roll) that the Sun NOT the earth was at the center of the solar system! Oooooh ahhhhh.
Lets not forget that not even 100 years ago, Dr.s were laughed out of medical conferences for suggesting that "viruses" were causing diseases. Ha! what a silly thing....viruses. You ask the question "Are you saying that you know everything that there is to know about the Universe?". So I guess you think the people running around the dessert 2000 years ago understood the universe then? Hmmmmm, interesting point. Its completely impossible that they made up things to make their lives better right? yes, of course how silly of me.
You use "witnessing small miracles" as your proof ?! There are thousands of examples in history of people witnessing things they did not understand and claiming it was something supernatural. earthquakes, comets, shooting stars, etc. etc. I know a homeless man in NYC here who claims he talks to jesus everyday. You should come and meet him, he would be all the "proof" you would need to convince the entire world of the word of god.
The last part you are referring to is called Pascal's wager. French philosopher Blaise Pascal originally came up with the idea. There are so many problems with these mentality its easy to break apart.
1) The implied assumption that god may exist (with a 50% probability, no less!)
2) The assumption that there is an afterlife with a heaven and hell
3) The assumption that the god cares about belief in him/her above all else
4) The assumption that if you believe in a god, it will definitely be the same god that actually exists.
5) The assumption that you lose nothing if it's false. You have lost a great deal, from time praying to a nonexistent entity (somebody mentioned just today praying several hours a day!!!) to morality (your god may ask you to hurt other people) and much more besides.
6) The assumption that people can believe in something simply because it benefits them. Would you believe goblins exist for twenty bucks? Why not?
7) The assumption that any god won't see through the "believing just to get into heaven" ploy.
8) That YOUR religion has got it all right. if you are a jewish person who lives a wonderful life but does not accept jesus as the messiah, do you go to hell? What about if you believe in a polytheistic religion? Does this mean you're going to hell also?
Siiiiigh dealing with religious people is exhuasting.

Lets see the theory of evolution...
Single cells that do not have any intelligence lived in the oceans. Then many of them started to get together and said lets co-exist. In order for this being to exist it is going to need some blood. So these unintelligent living organism come together and developed blood. But then they said we can not exist without a heart so lets develop a heart, and then a lung, (or is that a gill, since they were living in water) and so on and so on.
That is not at all absurd. Unintelligent living organism, understanding the complexities of a greater living being, and then forming such a being. So what if there is a missing link.
For you to say we are "brainwashed" means that there is 100% proof there is not god. Are you saying that you know everything that there is to know about the Universe? Because that is the only way you can make such a statement.
What proof do I have that god exists. I have witnessed small miracles, and I know others that have as well. That is all that I need.
If I am right I will go to heaven. If I am wrong I will have led a happy, calm, spiritual life. Either way I am a winner. Now if you are wrong...

There is no point in trying to explain something that has nothing to do with logic, reason, common sense, science, or evidence. I think the better way to approach conversations with religions is to discuss why people believe in it. People fear what they do not understand, look at how the mindset of the world 2000 years ago. Did these people seem the best people to make a rational logical conclusion about the origins of the universe? Also the arguement over the origin of the universe always seems so insane too. What came before the earth then huh?! You tell me mr. atheist?! What was there before the universe?! Oh thats right you can't answer that one. Mass can never be destroyed it can only be changed, so it MUST have originated from something...that is god. Okay, then where did God come from? That is my question. Well God has always existed...... Then why can't the universe have always existed? Oh don't be silly! *shakes head* This is why the question is a just and accurate question. Why bother trying to have a rational question with a group of people who are not capable of rationality.
How can you have a logical and/or intelligent conversation with someone when it ends with, because that is God's will/God can do anything/it is not meant for us to understand/God works in mysterious ways. Prove to me that pigs can't fly, you can't can you? prove it. Oh what scientifically it is not possible? Hmmm, I recall many things in the bible that are not. It doesn't make logical sense? You can't prove a lot of things, that doesn't mean you just accept them because your parents told you it.

shall we see the thought-approximately evolution... single cells that haven't any intelligence lived in the oceans. Then a great number of them started out to social gathering and stated shall we co-exist. to verify that this being to exist it is going to examine on some blood. So those unintelligent residing organism come jointly and greater effective blood. yet then they stated we are able to no longer exist and not utilising a heart so shall we strengthen a heart, and then a lung, (or is that a gill, thinking they have been residing in water) etc etc. that's by ability of no ability absurd. Unintelligent residing organism, assistance the complexities of a greater valuable residing being, and then forming one in each of those being. So what if there's a lacking link. so as which you will say we are "brainwashed" ability that there is a hundred% assistance there is no longer god. Are you saying which you recognize each and each ingredient that there is to earnings with reference to the Universe? since's the in undemanding words way you're able to make one in each of those assertion. What assistance do I truthfully have that god exists. I truthfully have witnessed small miracles, and that i comprehend others that have to boot. that's all that i p.c... If i'm suitable i visit bypass to heaven. If i'm incorrect i ought to have led a cheerful, calm, religious life. the two way i'm a winner. Now once you're incorrect...

ok. prove to me that a superior being does NOT exist. i am an agnostic who believes in evolution but anyone who has felt love or any strong emotion has felt something divine, something unique to our species. even if everything was started by a big bang... where did the material come from for it to happen? i do not think for an instant that a supreme being cares for me personally but it sure feels like there just has to be something to start this whole thing off. and why would you want to shoot anyone over their beliefs isnt that what the christians and muslims have been doing wrong in the first place.

That's pretty much it, i mean if Jesus flew down from the sky, and said that i have sinned and should ask him for forgiveness I might start believing in Christianity because the evidence would be so obvious. Well that's what it's like with evolution, I've read up on evolution and the Bible, and well, one makes more sense than the other.

Let me destroy your theory.....
I was a proud atheist for 28 yrs. I debated every Christian I could find to the point they would shut up or leave for they never could answer my questions, as I would stump them.
As I grew, matured and aged, my insight on life and all that is around me grew. Now, at 38, I 100% believe in the Bible. I do not go to church nor have I ever been a member of any church. I do not take church or bible classes at any school nor any other location. Actually I do nothing in the religious realm of things.
But I believe it all and I never had it crammed down my throat. And I have gone to college, been head of companies, head of states for companies, and currently have owned my own company for the past 10 yrs.
So....how can a ex-atheist, that later is educated.....believe?
Plus the fact that you are here, reading questions, answering them, asking them in the religious part of all places....shows that you care. Otherwise you wouldn't even be in this section as its common knowledge that humans do not go around what they do not like, but do go around items they have interest in.
So....why not stop fighting it, stop trying to act tough and smart and all superior. You are none of these, you are barely a speck in time. Stop listening to the BS crap school taught you...if you had a clue who schools started you'd run from them today. Stop listening to others and hear say...as it is nothing but gossip and all gossip is wrong. Just sit down, read the bible, get on YouTube and look up clips on Revelations, Genesis, Garden of Eden, Adam, Noah, Ark, Flood, or even get on BibleGateway.com and each passage you can listen to by clicking button on bottom of page.
Once you read it and understand it and its meaning, you will understand so much more in life. Get away from these visions of 10 headed beasts with 7 crowns, etc. The images have mislead you be the ignorant. For images are nothing more than a description. To help explain....this mention of the 10 headed beast is not an actual beast but talking about a country that is bad that has 10 sections and 7 rulers (Russia).
The images is what makes most balk at the bible for they literally take it as those beast and odd creatures lived. But you have to understand....this was men that lived thousands of years ago...they had visions and wrote them down. They had no clue what Russia is, USA, Iraq, what a tank is, what a helicopter is, etc. So they used words and pictures to describe what they saw in the language that had at that time.
Like when it mentions a swarm of locus were seen....that is a swarm of army helicopters. The lions head that breaths smoke and fire is a army tank painted tan for desert duty and is firing.
Once you "get" what the bible is saying, the entire picture will come clear to you. You will also then realize we are living revelations today, right in front of you, and you can almost daily see it coming true.

Wave me some proof and I would be happy to believe. There is none. Even many scientists if questioned for long enough admit that essentially the belief in the THEORY of evolution comes down to belief.

this is really a diatribe not a question. Try a softer more reasoned approach, and the only when asked. you'll get more converts. Why bother to explain? Because not everybody knows everything

Why bother? Because it's fun! The only way to remain intelligent is to continue to flex the brain. Also, If you do it right, you can bombard them with so much logic that they will only be able to spout scripture at you until they become small, huddled masses on the pavement.
